In the port of Palermo, Sicily, I had the opportunity to speak with two Palestinian passengers of the Freedom Flotilla.
Awni Farhat and Youssef Sammour are third-generation Palestinian refugees. Awni is from Gaza and managed to emigrate to the Netherlands after Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza in 2014.
Youssef was born outside of Palestine after his grandparents fled to Lebanon in 1948. Youssef’s father was born on the trail to Lebanon, as his family fled the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Zionist forces.
Awni and Youssef spent weeks on the Freedom Flotilla and talked to me about their longing to return to their homeland in conditions of peace and justice.
