In Human Rights, International, Middle East

On October 22, 2023, while visiting the border between Israel and Lebanon, I spoke with the Abbas Diab, the President of the Lebanese village of Taybeh. Taybeh lies two kilometres from the border with Israel.

Prior to 2000, Taybeh was occupied for years by Israeli military forces.

Mr. Diab and I discussed ongoing clashes between Hezbollah forces and the Israeli military. We also discussed the recent killing by Israeli forces of journalists who were working near Taybeh, the war on Gaza, and the plight of the Palestinian people.

Despite the growing risk of all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, Mr. Diab said that he knew what it was like to have his identity stolen from him, and he expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people.
