While sailing from Sweden to Norway on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, I interviewed the ship’s Swedish captain, Joel Opperdoes. Before this voyage to Gaza, Captain Opperdoes participated in two Freedom Flotillas, the first of which occurred in 2012.  In that year, as the Flotilla approached Gaza, Israel’s apartheid navy forcibly boarded the Flotilla’s vessels on the high seas. Israeli sailors then assaulted and kidnapped Captain Opperdoes and 27 passengers and crew members, transported them to Israel and detained them there against their will.
As the Captain explained, these actions constituted flagrant piracy, yet the Swedish government did essentially nothing.
